Do not purchase a Heart Rate Monitor or a Power Meter and just stare at numbers.

You need derived training zones specific to your current fitness level in order to maximize those training tools.  Without the proper zones, you’re just guessing on whether you are doing the correct workout for each outing to help you reach whatever your goals may be.

At Veloharmony our cycling threshold test is a 30 minute test but we record the last 20 minutes for power and heart rate and then reduce the amount by 5%  for Function Threshold Power (FTP) to account for what the actual power would have been for an hour’s effort.

After you buy your test, you will receive a download link that you can use to retrieve the details of how to execute the test. Once completed you will email your heart rate/power average to veloharmony and we will send you your derived training zones. Instructions and email link are also included in the test.

*Downloadable product links are limited to 2 downloads & expire the third day after your purchase. Please download promptly.

Accurately monitoring intensity is essential for ensuring that you get the most out of your training. With work, family and other commitments outside of cycling pressing your time on the bike, making the most out of your training time is essential.

Monitoring intensity guarantees that you will be making the most of the time you do get to ride and maximizing your fitness gains.

This is why one of the first priorities of all of the Veloharmony training plans is to conduct a functional threshold test which will give you your functional threshold heart rate (FTHR) or functional threshold power (FTP).

From these figures you can then determine and train to accurate and personalized training zones.

Cycling Threshold Test

  • Functional threshold represents the highest physical intensity that you can sustain for approximately one hour.
  • Many riders think of this as similar to performing a 25-mile time trial effort
  • This requires a maximal, but evenly distributed effort for the entire distance.
  • If you ride above this functional threshold intensity, fatigue will set in rapidly and your pace will drop significantly.
  • Functional threshold can be thought of as your cycling “red-line”
  • From this figure, highly accurate and personalized training zones can be calculated.

WHY ONLY TEST FOR 20 MINUTES?

Although the test is named the 20 minutes functional cycling threshold test, it is actually performed over 30 minutes (the cycling threshold test protocol explains this in more detail).

An hour maximal effort is physiologically, psychologically and logistically extremely demanding and an unrealistic proposition for the majority of riders. However accurate results can be estimated from a shorter, but still intense, 20-minute effort during the cycling threshold test.
